I searched high and low for a basic, close reading test that would simply show me whether students did their outside-of-class reading of FAHRENHEIT 451, and I found that none existed that met my needs (detailed + easy to grade). I was not striving for higher order thinking...just a basic, Accelerated-Reader-type quiz that would demonstrate completion of the assigned reading. The higher order thinking questions come out after my students have completed the reading--through Socratic Seminar. Thus,

Poetry circles use poems, raps and songs to engage young minds. With defined roles and responsibilities students can take charge of their learning experience and have deeper, more meaningful discussions around what they're reading. This product includes role sheets with prompts and instructions, space to reflect independently and space to record each other's thoughts. I've used this with students and found they loved poetry circles and using these templates made the work seamless and engaging!

Independent Reading / Novel Discussion Questions

This is a doc (easy to edit) with about 40 generic questions about novels--characterization, setting, conflict, etc. I use this with my high school students for literature circle discussion, Independent Reading Interrogations (this is when my kids pair up with a peer and must only ask questions about the other student's novel--then they flip roles), and for pop quizzes about novels we are reading in class. This is single page, divided into quadrants, with about 6-12 questions per quadrant. I lam

Have students utilize their own critical thinking about a topic still making news. The survey works well as a Google form to provide instant feedback for the class and spur discussion.Includes a personal journal entry, class survey, and notes. Works great to add activities to Banned Books week.

Stolen by Lucy Christopher vocab. words

This item provides dictionary definitions of target vocabulary words for the novel, Stolen, by Lucy Christopher. The vocabulary word is identified, page numbers where that word can be found in context are provided, and a dictionary definition is provided for each of the 95 words listed. Because the topic is for mature audiences, I would recommend using this at the secondary/high school level. As we read this book, I found there were many other topics for discussion and used this novel as a spri

This book walk is a perfect way to introduce your students to a book while giving them time to explore it themselves! Students can work independently or with a partner to examine the front and back cover of your next class read. The final page is a reflection and it can help you get a read of their opinions about reading. I always give this to my students before reading a book and it gets them excited for the unit!

Socratic Seminar Guidelines and Rubric for Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton

This is this assignment sheet and rubric I give to my students for the final socratic seminar of the year. This past year, I only had 6 AP Literature students, so the novel was broken down into 6 sections. However, if you have a larger class, you could easily change the sections and/or make the socratic seminar a fish bowl type of discussion where only a portion of your class discusses each day. Hope this is useful!
