Which Would You Buy? An Economic Lesson

Created by
Patty Rutenbar
Teaching economics isn't always easy for elementary students. This lesson might make it easier for them to understand WHY we buy the things we buy. We all have opinions that influence our choices. Using a name brand chocolate chip cookie and a store brand, students learn to compare the reasons why they buy the ones they do. In this lesson they also test their willpower by analyzing the cookie for a while before they even get to taste it. There is a chart for them to mark the differences in a coo

Making Homemade Ice Cream in a Bag

This is a really FUN activity. The students make ice cream in a bag. I have used it as an activity for physical science and phase changes. I have also just used it as a fun end-of-the-year activity. I also included some activities that I have my students do while they are waiting to make their ice cream or waiting for other kids to finish their ice cream. I have the kids create their own ice cream flavor. This is easily turned in to a writing assignment.

The Science of Glow Sticks

This activity is a great way to add a science lesson to a NEON or GLOW day with your students! The only materials you will need are glow sticks (I used three per table group), three clear cups, and cold/warm/hot water. Have the students work through the steps in the scientific method by predicting what they think will happen when they place one glow stick in each cup. For fun, I recommend doing this with the lights off and windows partially blacked out so it’s really fun for the students to watc

Having trouble motivating your students with adding and subtracting double (or triple digit) addends. Use this great file. I created this excel spreadsheet to allow student to click and drag house layouts, furniture, and even plants to an area of land. Once they choose an item, they type it in the spread sheet and tally it up. There is a self check feature on each page to see if they added or subtracted correctly. If you have extra time or you want to turn it into a game, print out the car

Find Economics resources | TPT

If you’re an educator or parent looking for printable or digital resources to help your student learn about economics, TPT has got you covered. We’ve got a comprehensive collection of economics and financial literacy resources available, including activities and lessons on trade, goods and services, and the stock market to name just a few. With plenty of TPT high-quality resources at your fingertips, you’ll be able to teach economics to your students in no time at all.

Economics activities to try

Here are a few examples of the different types of activities and lessons you can find on TPT to help teach students about economics:

Simulation Activities

You can introduce students to the world of investing, budgeting, and other economics-related activities through simulations. For example, have students research companies they want to "invest" in to show them how the stock market works. If you want to extend the lesson, you can have them periodically check in on their portfolios throughout the year to see how their investments are performing. Or, you could use a simulation to teach them about causes that led up to certain major historical events, like the stock market crash of 1929.

Budgeting Exercises

Help students understand the importance of managing their own financial resources by challenging them to create a budget. Give them a few hypothetical scenarios involving income, expenses, and financial goals. For example, you could ask them to plan a fictional character's monthly expenses, or have them create a budget to save for buying a house.

Trade Games

Through trading games, students can learn about importing and exporting, along with the impact of external forces and trade agreements. Ask students to work in teams and have them trade goods, record their imports and exports, and respond to charges (like tariffs and embargoes).

Cost-Benefit Analysis

Give students a real-world decision to make (e.g., building a new road, investing in a new technology, or buying property) and have them perform a cost-benefit analysis. To deepen the learning, you can ask them to justify their decisions with evidence.
