Save Fred is a great team building activity for the beginning of the year (or anytime)! The students must work together to save Fred (a gummy worm) from his capsized boat (a cup) using only paperclips.

Simple Machines Experiment: Make an Inclined Plane
YOU NEED:
+ A stack of books, 4-6 inches tall
+ A firm ruler (or other long, firm, flat object)
+ A round, heavy object like an orange, paper weight, or ball
MAKE AN INCLINED PLANE:
1. Prop the ruler up on the books so that one end rests on the top of the books and the other on the ground.

These job descriptions can be used in any small group setting to keep all students engaged. I laminated them, punched holes in the corners, and tied yarn on them to make a lanyard-type tag students wear during the activity. This keeps them from getting lost and makes the job "official" for younger students. They can also be edited to fit your needs.
