TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I am a K-5 Reading & Math Intervention Specialist at a Title I school. I began my teaching career in the fall of 2002 as a 4th grade teacher and transferred to my current position in the fall of 2006. In addition to my classroom experience, I began working part-time for an educational consulting company in February of 2014. While there, I learned methods and strategies for reaching and teaching ELL and low income/language students using a nationally recognized language acquisition program. During the summer of 2018 I had the honor and pleasure of working for Katie Garner, author of Secret Stories© and nationally recognized lecturer and leader in phonics and brain-based learning. As an Intervention Specialist, I have had the pleasure and honor of teaching hundreds of children everything from phonemic awareness to literary analysis and have loved every minute of it. I love finding new ways to reach struggling students!

MY TEACHING STYLE

I know that students learn better when they are able to personally relate to the content. Regardless of their background and ability, all students have emotions. It's because of this that I like to combine these personal and emotional components to create learning that students not only learn from, but also enjoy! Katie Garner, author of the Secret Stories©, taps into this social-emotive part of the brain to help students' acquisition of the most common phonics patterns. What I have learned from Katie and using Secret Stories has transformed not only my teaching but my students' lives, as well. Teaching with the brain in mind makes what seems impossible absolutely achievable. Marcia Tate, author of "Worksheets Don't Grow Dendrites," is another teacher that I strongly admire for her brain-savvy way of making school more effective and enjoyable for students and teachers. When students feel valued and understood, they perform better. When we add brain-based strategies to instruction, teachers and their students can't help but succeed!
