I have been working in urban, public education for the last thirteen years in several different capacities. I started out substituting at the elementary, middle, and high school levels before moving on to a full time paraprofessional position at the middle school level. Soon after, I was a teacher at alternative high school and eventually became the director of that alternative high school. From there, I became a middle school Social Studies teacher and have been doing it ever since!
From my past experiences, I have learned that building a positive and supportive relationship with my students is an integral part to ensuring their educational success. If my students understand that I not only care about the material, but also about the individual student, they will respect me and therefore respect the class. Autonomy. I have witnessed the most success with my students when they have had autonomy and control over their education. They are more willing to accept responsibility and take their education more seriously.
