Story Stage is a collaboration of 2 friends: one a speech-language pathologist (Rebekah), and the other an academic language specialist (Leigh). Together, we have 3 decades of experience guiding students K-12 towards language and literacy success. More recently, Rebekah and Leigh have been bringing Story Stage lesson plans, activities, and games to schools in and around their hometown of Fort Worth, Texas. All of our work is designed from a framework built on the latest research from educational neuroscience. Rebekah went back to school for her 2nd Master's degree a few years ago, and piloted an award-winning program in language development and writing at Cook Children's Hospital in Fort Worth,Texas. That pilot program is now what we call "Story Stage," and we've been integrating it into language arts curriculae and after-school programs ever since.
Our number one priority is for all students to get meaningful, organic feedback across a variety of contexts with plenty of opportunity for revision. That's why you will find that our materials most always involve parts of a story -- not only "flashcards." We target distinct skills through mini-lessons and then work towards using them in practical ways. Stories and conversations often provide this context -- and when they are blossomed from a student's own creative, beautiful mind ... the learning sticks. We believe that student generated content is powerful and motivating, and we strive to give students this kind of ownership over their learning whenever possible.
Rebekah won the University of Texas at Arlington's Provost's Award for university-wide graduate research in 2015. Her work has been featured in Advance Magazine, Fort Worth Magazine, and Voyage Dallas Online. Rebekah and Leigh were proud to be selected to present their work at the American Speech Language Hearing Association (ASHA) national conference in Orlando, Florida in 2019.
