Retell: Non-Fiction Text Structures (MLK special!)
- PDF
Description
RETELLING IS NOT JUST FOR FICTION! Want to help students understand and use more complex language? Have them retell non-fiction stories as well as the traditional fictional narrative. Retelling non-fiction offers a way to build and assess deeper reading comprehension, to go beyond the typical Accelerated Reader type of Q & A. This set includes 5 expository/non-fiction text structures: Descriptive, Sequence, Problem/Solution, Cause/Effect, and Compare/Contrast. This special set uses the story of Martin Luther King, Jr. to explore reading, retelling, and writing using the same compelling content so that students can focus on the pattern of the text structures.
The Lesson Plan Outline includes recommendations for 5 books (1 per week); suggested activities, games, and ideas for using the the text structure templates for retelling and writing. The Compare/Contrast template asks students to consider similarities and differences between Ghandi and MLK.
