TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have been teaching Home Economics (Family and Consumer Sciences) for almost 20 years, from Grades 6-12. I currently teach Food Studies, Textiles, and Fashion Merchandising, but have taught Family Studies, Child Development, Tourism, Science, and Dance.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I gravitate to Project Based Learning, and have been investigating Problem Based Learning for some of my courses. I really like to use real world examples and problems whenever possible in my classes, and incorporate technology as much as I can. I enjoy giving students choice in how they present their work to me.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

I have been honoured to twice be on the team that writes the Home Economics curriculum for my province (the Canadian equivalency of state standards). I have also been appointed an official reviewer of resources (e.g. textbooks, videos, and other large scale resources) for my subject area.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

I have degrees in Home Economics and Secondary Education (Home Economics). I also have a Masters in Home Economics Education.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

I taught Home Economics for a year in Australia. I am the author of a Senior Level Food Studies Textbook, and contributing author of the Junior Level book. I have given workshops on areas such as using Social Media in Elective areas, Building Blogs, Assessment in Home Economics, and Home Ec 2.0--Critical Thinking in the Home Economics Classroom.
