I'm the Director of Education for Curriculum with an innovative group of schools based in Finland, where I write integrated project-based curriculum and teacher training materials. In my professional journey, I've also been an IB Examiner, a Science Department Head, a Google-certified Educator, a teacher of IB Biology and IB Environmental Systems and Societies, an AP Physics teacher, and an enthusiastic collaborator for MYP Integrated Sciences. I avidly use Twitter to keep up and share the latest educational research and science news as part of my professional learning community, and I've been teaching secondary science since 2004 in a variety of schools and curricula in four countries on three continents.
In my classes and teaching resources, I promote a sense of guided inquiry and exploration through student menus of scaffolded, sequential, differentiated, and personalized learning experiences and activities. My lessons synthesize the knowledge and creativity of other educators and content experts with direct instruction as well as both guided and independent practice through age- and skill-appropriate activities. Genius Hour is one of my favorite approaches to middle school and high school science because, when implemented properly, students produce some of the most in-depth evidence of learning I've encountered as a teacher.
10th grade students voted me most likely to tell a corny science joke!
