Have taught math at a charter school for at-risk students for 10 years. The first 2 years were mostly tutoring students who were taking on-line courses. After that, a database of MORE THAN 43,000 problems was created in order to conduct actual classes. During the last 7 years, I have taught (remedial) pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Geometry, Applied Math and Algebra II to hundreds of students. Since the database has the flexibility to handle curricula from grade 3 to 10 and can handle tracking of student and group progress by domain and standard according to over 60 criteria (ethnicity, gender, teacher, previous school, etc.), it is--in its complete form--for sale on my website (www.iaimath.com).
My style starts with empathy for those who are several years behind in math. Then, the basics are constantly taught and reviewed. Worksheets (NOT your grandfather's kind of worksheets either!) are created so that there is plenty of practice in (isometric) drawing, shading, constructing and mental math. It is understood that MENTAL MATH is a priority and calculators are NOT allowed. Challenging problems and real-life examples are stressed. Additionally, because of the wide variety of students in my school, I have had to create thousands of extra credit problems for the gifted and those who enjoy extra challenges. Aside from the above, I emphasize humor, discipline and getting to know students.
