TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have taught English Language Arts for six years in a large, diverse high school in New York City. I have experience teaching English grades 9-12, as well as creative writing. Since the beginning of my teaching career, which coincided with the beginning of the transition to Common Core, I have worked tirelessly to create, revise, and finesse original lessons that will cultivate students' skills and prepare them for college/careers. Additionally, since I have the most experience teaching 11th grade, where our students take the state's English Regents Exam and the SATs, another goal of mine is to help students develop the skills necessary to succeed on these exams. My store primarily features ready-to-use, but easy to modify, lesson plans that are coherently designed to help student's meet the day's specific aim. All activities (Aim, Do Now, Turn and Talks, Vocabulary Previews, Mini Lessons, Reading Periods, Work Periods, Exit Cards, etc.) are designed to help student's reach the aim. I am well-versed in the Danielson framework for teaching, which is used in New York City to rate teachers, and design my lessons accordingly so that I am able to help student's meet the lesson's objective and to provide evidence that I have done so.

MY TEACHING STYLE

My philosophy is that while outside of the classroom, while assessing student work, lesson planning, etc. a teacher should be working very hard, but during the lesson itself, the students should be working just as hard-- if not harder-- as the teacher circulates to assist them, monitor their learning, and challenge their thinking with probing questions. My lessons are designed to be student-centered. I believe that students work best when they are all actively engaged in the day's activities and are working with one another. As you will see in most of my lessons, the onus is on each student to be actively reading aloud with their partners, annotating the text, and responding to questions. There are opportunities for students to have their voices heard during turn and talks and sharing out of discussion questions.
