Julia Alvarez Ironing Their Clothes Common Core ELA Poetry Multiple Choice Prep

This product contains five text-dependent, multiple-choice questions about Julia Alvarez's poem "Ironing Their Clothes." Julia Alvarez is a Dominican-American poet, novelist, and essayist, whose works include How the García Girls Lost Their Accents and In the Time of the Butterflies.

These questions are modeled after the New York State Common Core ELA Regents exam. I created these questions using common question stems that appear on this exam, and have infused frequently recurring vocabulary that appears on the exam in the answer choices. The directions also require students to engage in metacognition, as they are asked to make their thinking visible by providing a one-sentence rationale to justify each answer.

This product includes an answer key. The actual poem, due to copyright reasons, is not included, but it can be easily found through a search engine.
