While this is only my third year in education, I feel that this is a strength, not a weakness. I have taught in urban and suburban schools - from majority minority to more mixed environments.
I try to help my students have a conversation with whatever they are reading: commonly known as Reader Response Theory, from Louise Rosenblatt. I look at alternative ways for students to respond to what they read in order to assess their understanding, or to help them practice the CCSS. Twitter posts, Propaganda Posters, creating Mix Tapes - teaching engaging things in an engaging way will help students make connections between what they read and their lives. I believe that skills should be taught over content, and that Project Based Learning (PBL) is the best way to help students practice those skills in the classroom. PBL that helps students think, write, and create for an authentic, real world audience, will prepare them for what waits for them beyond the classroom.
