First Grade Smarty Cats

I have taught all primary grades, including pre-K. My special-needs students have included those with autism and speech issues, and plain old quirky kids who need extra help in navigating social situations.

I have high expectations for my students, and require them to stretch themselves in order to succeed. Like any primary teacher, I scaffold information so that students can feel secure in their ability to learn. I expect students to be kind and caring toward one another, and to make amends when they have caused harm. When students lie, cheat, or show unkindness, I try to take a step back from the situation so that I can give a skillful response. I find that social skills stories help me to address behaviors in a positive and caring manner.

Hmmm. I think that it's an honor to be given 20+ small children every morning, and to be trusted to teach and love them well. Outside of the classroom, I spend a great deal of time supporting other teachers in their own daily challenges. I am the president of my local union chapter, and work with non-teachers to help them understand why it is that we stay on campus so long after the final bell rings.
