I have been teaching for 12 years in Virginia, California, and now New Mexico. My primary teaching subject has been secondary Language Arts. I have a college board certified AP English Language curriculum which I have taught. I am also credentialed in Music, Visual Arts, Family and Consumer Sciences, P.E., Health, Performing Arts, Gifted and Talented, Social Studies (all,) and Library/Media, and have these certifications for PreK-12. Currently, I teach Art, P.E., Music, and Study skills in an online school. I am the parent of a 14 month-old girl (as of January 2013.) I have taught primarily in inner city Title I schools, but have also taught in non-Title I district high schools as well as charter high schools.
Practice kindness is the golden rule in my classroom. I advocate and use positive discpline, project-based learning, thematic units, group work and discussions in the form of socratic seminars, literature circles, and other. I believe in bringing democracy and choice into the classroom as a tool of character and community-buiding. As a high school teacher, engaging lessons are always my goal and as much as I expect my students to give and participate, so do I expect the same from myself to encourage them to join in and learn.

I had a previous career in film and television as first an assistant, then script supervisor, then script coordinator, and finally very briefly as a tv writer before I found my real calling...teaching. I am very grateful to my arts education and career for teaching me to be resourceful, productively creative, and to know that you can do/create anything!
