TEACHING EXPERIENCE

My educational background supports the writing of music resources and curriculum. I have a Bachelors degree in Music Education and a Masters degree in Curriculum and Design with a specialization in Arts Integration. I have also received my National Board Teaching Certification in the area of Adolescent to Young Adult Band. I am currently serving on a National Writing Team working on creating the Common Core Standards for the Arts. This is a brand new initiative that will be released to the States for adoption in June. This work has led to me serving on my states Music Education Executive Board. Here I give monthly updates on the writing of the Common Core Standards and work to make sure educators within the state are informed and prepared for this change. I have presented work publically through conference session presentation and published articles in a state Music Education Journal. I have used these forums to shared my work in Arts Integration and my current work in writing the Common Core Standards with those within my state and local school district.

MY TEACHING STYLE

My lessons are centered on my personal philosophy of education and the importance of integrating various subject area content into every lesson. I believe students learn through making personal connections with the content. Students are more apt to remember and truly understand musical concepts when they can connect it to something they already know. I also firmly believe everything we do in the classroom must have a clear purpose for students, one that students know and understand. If students understand WHY they are learning something they will become more engaged in the learning process.
