I have 10 years of experience working as a licensed / certified Speech-Language Pathologist. I've worked exclusively in pediatrics in a variety of settings, including private practice, early intervention, home health, and the schools. Of all the settings I've practiced in, the school setting has been my true passion. I've been in my current school district for 8 years. I worked for 3 years on a multidisciplinary evaluation team within the Preschool Services Department. I've spent the last 5 years based at an elementary school serving students ranging in age from Preschool to 5th grade. I have experience supporting a variety of self-contained special education classrooms, including a Title-1 Preschool class, a Cross Categorical Kindergarten (CCK) class, and an Intellectual Disabilities Mild (ID Mild) class. I also work with special education students with a range of disabilities, including Autism, ADHD, Specific Learning Disability, Developmental Delay, and Speech-Language Impairment.
The field of speech-language pathology is undergoing a major shift towards evidence based practice (EBP). I strive to ensure that my interventions are evidence based (they work), and relevant (they matter!). Because speech therapy services in the school setting often follow a pull-out model (students are removed from the regular education setting), services can feel isolated, and carryover of skills back to the classroom becomes a concern. My goal is to create products that are tied to the Common Core and incorporate the curriculum, so that skills are not trained in isolation. Skills should be targeted using curriculum based materials, which result in greater transfer for supporting a student's academic achievement and advancement.
