I have taught 7th and 8th grade ELA, 7th and 8th grade journalism, and 6th grade youth leadership.
As an educator, it is my job to teach children not what to think but rather how to think and analyze the world around them so that they may become educated and resourceful contributors to a diverse society. In order to foster an environment where students are learning to their fullest capabilities, I first create one in which students feel safe and valued. My role in the classroom is to equally share the focus with students by creating a learner-centered environment where students communicate and collaborate to direct their own learning. I strongly believe students are more engaged in the learning process when they can interact with one another and participate actively. The use of 21st century technology is vital in preparing students for higher education and other competitive positions post secondary school, but teaching them how to responsibly use technology is equally as important. I believe all children can learn, therefore it is my goal for all students to be given a fair opportunity to do so regardless of race, gender, intellect, learning style, disability, or age.
