Description

Looking for a no-prep end of year project for middle schoolers, or an activity for after state testing? Students discover amazing nocturnal animal adaptations with this engaging and collaborative hexagonal thinking activity! Take a deeper look into the distribution, habitat, niche, diet, behavior, adaptations and challenges faced by nocturnal and crepuscular animals. This is a fresh take on research projects that allows students to make connections and collaborate with peers. The matrix created through the collaboration part of this project is perfect for Bulletin Boards. Also....teachers find this to be a very engaging Sub Plan for science classes.

What is a Hexagonal Thinking Activity?

Hexagonal thinking is an immersive, kinesthetic strategy designed to deepen understanding through the exploration of interconnected concepts. Each student is given a hexagon-shaped card, with each facet asking a question related to the overarching topic: Nocturnal Animals. After reading about nocturnal animals, students record the answers to the questions on the hexagon. Then, students form groups with other students and align their hexagons by finding similarities between their animals. As they align their hexagons, they're not just placing cards next to each other; they’re building a visual matrix that showcases the interwoven habitats, adaptations, and niches of nocturnal and crepuscular animals.

Using Hexagonal Thinking Activities offers students a dynamic way to see, process, and interconnect essential concepts, transforming individual ideas into a grand interconnected matrix.

Product Highlights:

  • Hexagonal Worksheet Templates: Students extract information about their assigned nocturnal or crepuscular (active at dawn and dusk) animal, jotting down details in appropriate sections of the hexagon.

  • Collaborative Exploration: Encourage students to come together, find connections, and assemble their hexagons to create an interconnected matrix.

  • Versatile Use: Perfect for classroom activities, bulletin board displays, substitute plans, and even extra credit opportunities.

  • Differentiated Biography Reading Passages: 27, 2-page reading passages about various nocturnal and crepuscular animals. Grade ranges include:
    • Grades 3-5 (3 included)
    • Grades 5-7 (8 included)
    • Grades 6-8 (3 included)
    • Grades 7-9 (13 included)
