Chat GPT Nocturnal Animal Adaptation Hexagonal Thinking Activity

    Description

Coming to the last week of school and looking for NO PREP, FUN End of Year Activities for your Middle Schoolers? This is the bundle you have been searching for! You finally made it to the end of the year... make some fun memories without sacrificing instruction time or spending free time prepping. Students will have a blast with these SIX activities: Escape the Hot School Escape Room, End of Year Reflection, Science Awards, Endangered Animals Design a Hoodie Activity, Nocturnal Animals Hexagonal Thinking Activity and Nocturnal Animals Two Truths and a Lie.

Escape the Hot School Escape Room

Students will have a blast with this FUN, NO-Prep Escape the Hot School Escape Room. Your 5th grade, 6th grade, 7th grade or 8th grade students will read a *high-interest reading passage about animal thermoregulation, and then use the reading passage to find clues in four fun challenges. Each challenge will force students to read carefully to find the answers. Answer sheets and Escape Room coupons for winners are also included.

*When I say "high interest" I mean it! Kids will be amazed at the adaptations some animals use for thermoregulation. Did you know that echidnas make snot bubbles and marabou storks poop on their legs to cool off? Yep! Very clever methods of using evaporative cooling to stay cool!

    THE CHALLENGE:

It’s the final day of school before summer break and excitement is in the air. However, as the last period begins, the school’s air conditioner breaks down. The classroom quickly heats up, and you and your classmates start to feel the discomfort of the sweltering heat.

Unexpectedly, the classroom door locks – part of a new automated system that hasn’t been tested properly. The principal announces to the school that there is a glitch in the new computer system used to manage the school property. The same glitch that turned off the air conditioning units also automatically locked the doors.

Trapped in the warm science classroom, your teacher decides to turn this uncomfortable, and somewhat troubling, situation into a teachable moment. She poses a thought-provoking question:

“What do animals do when they are trapped in a hot environment?”

The answer can be revealed by using a four-digit code. You will use the reading passage that follows, along with the Four Challenges, to determine the code and reveal the answer.

How Does this NO-PREP Escape Room Work?

⭐Students will be presented with an escape room challenge (see above)

⭐Students will then read a 5-page, high-interest reading passage with
beautiful color photos (printer-friendly version without photos is also
    included)

⭐Students will answer questions in 4 fun challenges. The answers are found in
the 5-page reading passage (no extra content necessary)

⭐As students complete each challenge, they will uncover a digit that will be
    recorded on the answer sheet

⭐After all 4 challenges are complete, students will have a 4-digit code

⭐The code will be used to "unlock" the "Escape Message"

⭐There are three options for unlocking the "Escape Message"

    1. No Prep Option: The teacher reveals the message with a paper sign when students present the correct code.
    2. Lockbox Option: Message is inside lockbox with 4-digit programmable lock (available on Amazon for $4) that can only be unlocked with the correct code. “Congratulations” message and rewards are placed inside the box ahead of time.
    3. Digital Option: Students use code to unlock a password-protected Google Slide (link provided in teacher instructions). The slide reveals the "Congratulations" message.

    What's Included:

    • 5-Page, High-Interest Reading Passage about Animal Thermoregulation (Cape Ground Squirrels, Elephants, Red Kangaroos, Pelicans, Swimming Pigs, Echidnas, Jackrabbits, Dogs, Marabou Storks)
    • 4 Fun, No-Prep Challenges
    • Answer Keys to each Challenge
    • Answer Sheet for students to record answers

    More about each Challenge...

    • Escape Room Challenge 1: Matching
      • When students match the words with the answers, their lines that cross through letters. The letters must then be unscrambled to find the clue to the first number in the code.

    • Escape Room Challenge 2: True or False
      • Students answer eight true or false questions. As they answer the questions, they color in (or cross off) "coins" with different values. The coins that are colored in are added together. The sum provides the clue to the second number in the secret code.

    • Escape Room Challenge 3: Multiple Choice
      • Students answer eight multiple choice questions from the reading passage. The answer lead to the third clue in the secret code.

    • Escape Room Challenge 4: Sentence Search
      • Students are give seven sentences from the reading passage. Students much find in which paragraph of the reading passage the sentence is located. The paragraphs without a selected sentence are the clue to the final number of the secret code.

When students successfully complete each challenge, they will end up with a four digit code. If the code is correct, that means they have "Escaped" and successfully completed each challenge.

    End of Year Reflection

End of Year Reflection Activities are a great way to close out the school year! This is an excellent collaborative learning activity that will bring closure to your school year. Designed for science classes, yet editable for any class! This one-pager reflection worksheet will guide your students through a reflection on their learning experiences throughout the year. Designed to be completed at the end of the year, this tool will facilitate self-evaluation and encourage students to recognize their achievements and progress in science class.

This easy-to-implement activity is ideal for both middle school and high school science students. With no preparation required, educators can simply print the provided questions on a single sheet. Students are then guided to reflect and respond to six essential questions, fostering personal reflection and a positive end of the year wrap-up.

What is a Hexagonal Thinking One-Pager?

It’s a one-page worksheet with a hexagon split into six sections, each housing a unique and editable question. Your students get to answer questions like "What activity or lab experiment was most memorable to you?" in their own creative way. The questions are completely editable, so you can change them to suit your needs.

Once they've filled out their hexagons and cut them out, it's time for a class-wide brainstorm. Students find connections in their answers and link their hexagons together. For example, if a student responds that his most memorable activity was the Mystery Powders CSI Lab, and another student responds that she was challenged by the Forensic Science Activities, then those hexagon sides will be matched together. The class continues to collaborate as they connect hexagons based on shared or complementary responses. The result is a colorful tapestry of interests.

The goal of these resources is to get students to open up, connect, reflect on their experience in science classes at the end of the year. It's easy-to-use, customizable, and the perfect way wrap up the school year!
