End of Year Project

This project is something I have my Algebra students work on during their last 3-4 days of school. They write a letter and create five single-page study guides and reference sheets for a future Algebra student on major topics. Many of them get really creative with this project, and giving my new students their letters and materials is a fun experience in the upcoming school year.

Word Problems: What's all the FUSS about?!?! This graphic organizer is great to assist students in answering word problems. It uses the acronym "FUSS" to assist students with the process of solving word problems. This worked great during our systems of equations unit but can be easily adapted to accommodate other units as well.

Compound Probability with Skittles

Students use a small cup of skittles (or a fun size bag) to pull two skittles and then find the probability (likelihood) of pulling that "exact combination" or "either occurring combination". Then, through reflection questions, students realize that "exact combinations" are far less likely to occur than "either occurring" combinations.

Unit Conversions; Converting Units 2012 with Answer Key (Editable)

My students need a lot of "hand-holding" as they are learning to convert one system of units to another, such as converting miles per hour into feet per second. The method on this worksheet walks them through the process, step-by-step, so that they can successfully accomplish this goal. It basically uses a dimensional analysis approach, in which they need to select conversion factors (such as 1 mile per 5280 feet, or 5280 feet per mile) by which to multiply an expression without changing its v

If your experience in teaching Algebra 1 is anything like mine, you'll start off the semester with kids with a wide variety of backgrounds: some will come well-prepared, others less so. I like to start off with a brief, 20-minute diagnostic test to see where they are. I grade it based on effort, and I explain to the students that it helps inform me about how to move forward with them this semester. I have them write directly on it. Systems of Equations Number of Solutions Card Sort

In this activity, students examine graphs and systems of equations to determine if they have one solution, no solution, or infinite solutions. They sort the cards into three piles and an answer key is included for easy checking. Students just need to know how to convert equations to slope-intercept form in order to complete this activity. It is typically taught when students learn to solve systems of equations by graphing. Answer Key included!
