This is an AP Language and Composition Audit that has been approved by the AP College Board. It includes summer assignments and a day by day syllabus for the entire year. This is the paper I pass out on the first day of class. It clearly states my expectations of the class and identifies projects and other activities. It also lists requirements and materials for the course. This can be manipulated to fit any teacher's needs. I am very clear and upfront about what I expect from my students. This sets the tone for the class.

This syllabus is my own, drafted for audit in 2007. While some of my day-to-day activities have changed, my basic course architecture has not. I use The Bedford Reader (9th Ed.) in the fall and partway through the spring, and then as we prepare for the exam we start reading a trio of titles "located" in present-day Congo: King Leopold's Ghost by Adam Hochschild, Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad, and The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver. Students engage in a wide variety of reading and w

When I taught Freshman Comp the standard way, using the standard textbooks and making grammar notes in the margins of student papers, I became exhausted and students learned little. While at Berklee, through insight and accident, I stumbled on a novel way to teach college writing. This is a "readable writing" method based on t
