I start each class with a journal and discussion based on a historical event that happened each day in history. This is a fantastic way to engage students in more material than just the standards or reading you scheduled for the day. Students get their minds warmed up to thinking, practice writing, and learn something "extra" for their day in history! It also sparks great conversations.
