I used the 1977 film "Star Wars: A New Hope" to better relate this concept to my class. Each stage of Campbell's theory is explained briefly, and then the corresponding scene from the film is described.

This is a 15 slide power point that discusses the author's methods to create a character--both direct and indirect.
