My students wrote a short reflection about 1st grade using this template that was shared with parents at conference time. I find that conference time lends itself to focusing on strengths and areas for refinement so that students can set goals. This can be used at any time during the year for opinion writing. They wrote the best thing about 1st grade, their favorite subjects, and an area they wanted to improve in. You can modify it for your grade level.
