STEM Drag Device Parachute Challenge (Engineering Design Activity)

Created by
Vivify STEM
Drag Device STEM Parachute Activity Students use the engineering design process and explore the forces of gravity and air resistance to design a drag device to slow down a payload. This challenge uses a ping pong ball to represent a rover landing on Mars. The rover must remain inside an uncovered cup during drop and impact testing. This hands-on activity is an engaging design challenge that allows students to work in teams, apply the engineering design process, and connect math topics to real-wo

This engaging STEM challenge is a fun way to incorporate the engineering design process into your classroom or afterschool program! Students use the engineering design process and explore compression and tension forces in bridges while building their own bridge! This challenge also highlights Emily Roebling, the first woman field engineer who was instrumental in the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge. History, science, engineering, literature (optional), and math-- it is all included along with

Design a parachute to save a spider! This is a fun Halloween STEM activity that your students will love with a version for distance learning! When some spiders are born, they make parachutes out of their silk in order to safely drop from their mother’s web. They release a few strands of silk that form a triangular-shaped parachute that catches the breeze and lifts them in the air! But in our challenge today, one of the baby spiders is unable to deploy their parachute and needs your help to get d

To practice ratios and equvalent ratios students will compare kool aid solutions. I have students complete the front by analyzing models and completing a table. Then on the back students get to make 5 solutions. I give them solid drink mix ( 2 types), a spoon, mixing cup, water, and small tasting cups. They make the kool aid, rate the taste, and write the ratios of teaspoons to mL of water.

Kid Engineers Build Test Calculate and Share SIMPLE MACHINES - STEAM GATE

Build simple machines like engineers. Test them like scientists. Understand them like scholars. Present them like professionals. Even in our 21st Century technological world we still need designers, engineers, and craftspersons with a solid understanding of the basics to provide the tools to get the job done. How would you feel, after all, if your calculus teacher didn’t know the times tables? If you teach engineering, thrive in an active, hands-on environment, or guide gifted learners, Simple

Understanding Scale and Proportion to Model in Science

A completely editable Google slide deck for students to work through (like a digital worksheet). We often have to create models in science in order to study things that are too small (or even too large) to see or handle. These slides aim to deepen students' understanding of similarity, scale, and modeling in science by challenging their preconceptions and encouraging active engagement with the concepts. By contrasting similar and non-similar shapes, students can better appreciate the nuances of s

This resource is a fully differentiated lesson aimed at teaching Physics: Waves. This is designed to be a continuation to lesson 1 - What is a wave? This lesson has 5 learning objectives that are structured in the IDEAL format: *Identify the wave equation. *Describe how to find the speed of a water wave. *Explain how the depth of water affects the speed of a wave. *Apply your results to explain why waves at sea are more dangerous than waves at shore. *Link your understanding of energy to e
