Food Pyramid Graphing
Using the food keys, students can color in the graph for each one of the food groups above. Have students cross off each food after it has been added. At the bottom, count how many of each food group. Since the food pyramid state for each group "between 2 - 3" for example, I will still have a class after the worksheet with the facts.

Included is a visual recipe for making grilled cheese roll-ups. There are 2 differentiated comprehension worksheets - 1 for readers/writers and 1 multiple choice and 1 sequencing activity.
Cooking is a great motivator for students and a great way to increase receptive and expressive language by requesting and having students request. In my class class we cook weekly and prepare the same recipe for a month. This allows for fluency and greater ability to follow directions.

Kitchen Item Matching
Many of my student benefit from participating in matching tasks. Some are still learning to match, while others have mastered the skill of matching but benefit from using the tasks as a bell ringer activity to get warmed up. This matching task is appropriate for special education students of all ages, as the activity is very functional for life skills classes.
