Cold War Berlin: Musical Resistance Unit
The Cold War, especially the erection of the Berlin Wall, affected the music, fashion, and politics of Germany, as well as the United States. This Unit asks students an Essential Question: How did music help people resist what the Berlin Wall symbolized? The first activity gets students talking about why a country might build a wall and what effect it would have on its citizens. Cold War Berlin: Song Comparison Graphic Organizer (3 songs; lyrics included)
The Essential Question for this unit is: How did music help people resist what the Berlin Wall symbolized? Students will analyze 3 songs from the 1980s released as both a response and in resistance to the wall put up in Cold War Berlin. The songs included for analysis are - Nina's - 99 Red Balloons, Billy Joel's - Honesty, and Vladimir Vysotsky - I Don’t Like. Students will analyze important lyrics, each song's message, and the emotions conveyed by filling out the graphic organizer.
