Know The Code: R-Controlled - "ir"
A multisensory resource based on the principles of Orton Gillingham. The focus is r-controlled / bossy "ir." Numerous activities to support understanding of r-controlled words are included.
R-Controlled/Bossy R (both terms are used interchangeably) include: ar, er, ir, or, and ur. The R "bosses" the vowel around, causing the vowel to sound different.
The R comes after the vowel (this helps students for spelling purposes).

Originally, I developed this method while working with students who struggled with reading and/or spelling. I came up with a solution that made it easy for these kids to learn essential phonics quickly and easily. I have taught using the method outlined to classroom kids, small groups, tutoring individuals, adults and even beginners (adapted to suit their age).
