Dr. Edward Fry (1980) wrote that about half of all written material in English is composed of the first 100 Instant Words and their common variants (meaning words with inflectional suffixes such as -s, -es, -ing, -ed, -er, -est); the first 10 Instant Words make up about 25% of the words in print; and the 300 Instant Words make up about 66% of English words in print. Students will improve their accuracy, fluency and comprehension in both literacy and oral language when they learn the FIW.
