The intent is to allow students to recall important information or analyze important details; however, often students just skim their reading to find the answers. This focusing note sheet will allow students to be more independent reading. It will require that they identify and analyze the important details on their own. Esperanza Character Chart - House on Mango Street

The main character in House on Mango Street, Esperanza, changes drastically from the beginning to the end of the story. In this 'coming of age' story, Esperanza learns about her culture, who she is, who her friends are, and begins to define 'home' as a feeling and as people around her rather than a place. This worksheet can be used as a go-to guided reading note sheet. The notes begin with asking students to develop a prediction for what will happen in the chapter based on what they have read previously. Next the students are provided with spaces to notate important events, new characters, and key vocabulary. Lastly, the students are asked to create another prediction (after reading the chapter) about what they think will happen in the next chapter with evidence as to why that might be.
