Beginning of the Year - About Me Hanging Display Activity & Rubric
This is a beginning of the year activity to creatively introduce students.
We start by exploring what a symbol is. Next, we go over the rubric and view some examples, rating them along the rubric. Students then choose 5 symbols (pictures, 3-D objects, or hand-drawn items) are used and attached to their hanger.
After forming the hanging display, in class each student writes what each symbol represents and why that symbol is important to the individual. You can choose to scaffold the writing

Three Types of Communities Chart
A simple, easy to use chart to compare and contrast rural, suburban and urban communities based on where people live, where they work, how children get to school and where people shop in each community. Can be printed on large paper for younger students/ larger handwriting or completed virtually - on a smartboard or shared google doc.
