This is a beginning of the year activity to creatively introduce students. We start by exploring what a symbol is. Next, we go over the rubric and view some examples, rating them along the rubric. Students then choose 5 symbols (pictures, 3-D objects, or hand-drawn items) are used and attached to their hanger. After forming the hanging display, in class each student writes what each symbol represents and why that symbol is important to the individual. You can choose to scaffold the writing
