"Book in a Bag" is an activity that I use to reinforce reading fluency and comprehension skills. I find old leveled readers, A-Z booklets, or anything that is on that particular student's independent reading level and I send it home in a plastic, gallon size, zip-lock baggie with their name written on it in black Sharpie. The student keeps it at home for a week and returns it the next week for a new book. This way, I know that they are reading books at home that are on their own reading level. I

The index cards are Fontas and Pinnel's 100 high frequency words. My advice is to print them on colored card stock and laminate them. Then I separate the cards into piles of 10-15 and put them on rings. Students are given one set (one ring) and expected to practice them everyday. Once the student has "graduated" from that ring they can move on to the next. I have a star chart to go with this that shows how many times each student has graduated.
