Building Blocks Handout for Five Paragraph Essay Writing
This handout lays out the Building Blocks of 5 Paragraph Essay Writing. There is a block for each paragraph, and inside each block are the details that should be included in that particular paragraph of the essay.
For example, the first block is titled: Paragraph #1: Introduction. It notes that the introduction should include an attention grabbing sentence, background information on the topic and the thesis statement. The second block discusses the first body paragraph and so on.

This was developed due to my students not being able to fit their thoughts into the typicall diagram for compare and contrast.

We use CER in my district (I've heard other other use ICE) so I have that along the bottom of the page. You can easily edit this out if you don't use this particular method.

Based on the MEL-Con graphic organizer designed by Jim Schiferl, this MEL-Con has been cleaned up to create more writing space for students, include a writing prompt box, and eliminate the color-coded boxes so that it can be readable after duplicated.
