This lesson will help students practice for the NYS ELA exam. They will understand what is expected to receive a perfect score using the NYS rubric modified to be child friendly. Students will learn strategies for writing a perfect paragraph. All extended responses in this lesson are ELA formatted. Two genres, poetry and a fable are used.

This Smartboard Notebook file is a graphic organizer for the Journeys-5 selection "Vaqueros: America's First Cowboys" (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2012), lesson 5.23. Students add main ideas and details to the organizer. There is also a summarizing exercise. My students score better on comprehension assessments when they use a graphic organizer while reading.
