Find Figurative Language in Text
Use your favorite trade books or stories to find figurative language. This can be an ongoing chart to keep track of examples of figurative language. I usually spend a week going over each of the kinds of figurative language. Then we read the books Love That Dog and Hate That Cat by Sharon Creech. I have my students look for figurative language while we read these books and document their findings on this graphic organizer. You could use this with your whole class, or give to students to us

Mentor Sentences Form - Weekly
Choose one sentence from your class's shared reading to focus on each week. Students keep the paper at their desks and pull it out each day to work on that sentence. This is a great way to get students writing like the authors we read. Instead of fixing mistakes, they focus on mimicking great writing. I always try to choose a sentence that ties in with our grammar focus for the week. Print on colored paper so student won't loose throughout the week!

Context Clue Graphic Organizer (Suitable for Distance Learning)
Here is a context clue graphic organizer I created to help students define words as they read. It can be modified to provide exact words in a specific text or can be used for independent words they don't know. I teach different strategies to define words and then on this graphic organizer, to increase their metacognition, they need to code which strategy they used.
