This is the last of a 5 week unit about Black History that includes information about the past Winter Olympics in Russia, history of the Olympic rings and colors and honors Jessie Owens. It includes higher order thinking questions and common core standards. Week one was living famous African Americans and had a free download that explains more about creating the five week class chapter book. Week 2 was Inventors, Week 3 was Activists, Week 4 includes President's Day.

Summarizing Text: William Shakespeare
Students will practice their writing skills by reading a one-page text on the life of William Shakespeare. They will then use the Active Reading template to find 7 facts in the texts, write the main idea in one sentence, and then synthesize all of the information into a 5-sentence paragraph. This activity gives my ESOL students valuable reading and writing experience in one short activity.
