Bob Dylan: Music as Poetry with "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue"

This is a wonderful way to introduce the blurred lines between genres, as well as a great way to engage in the learning process—for all students of all ages love music. They may be reluctant poets, but once the connection is made that some songs are indeed poetry (or, heaven forbid—the acronym R.A.P. stands for Rhythmic American Poetry!), the sky is the limit for a renewed appreciation for poetry. This can be a nice addition to any poetry unit, or, it stands alone as an extension activity, a c

It begins by talking about how Abraham Lincoln, Rosa Parks, and Martin Luther King, Jr. "stood up" (or sat down) to make a difference. At the end of the song, I challenge children:Your chance to make a difference in the world is here. Stand up for your beliefs. Make your dreams clear.Ask yourself, "What problems do I see?" Figurative Language in "Karma" by Taylor Swift

In this assignment. Students annotate Taylor Swift's "Karma", looking for figurative language (metaphor, personification, simile, and idiom). Students then write their own figurative language for karma. This comes with the handout and answer key. It's in google docs, so you can edit it how you want. I use this with my continuation high school students and they enjoy it.
