Literature and Music: A Natural Connection
After 15 years of teaching varying abilities levels of 9-12th grade, the only assignment that NEVER fails to engage my students is one with music. This resource is a diverse chart of 200 authors (classic and contemporary) connected to 265 songs (the artist's name is included) from multiple genres (poetry, novels, short stories, plays,etc). Holiday Song Analysis & Informational Research: "Do They Know It's Christmas?"
Listening to holiday songs in the classroom can add to the spirit of the season, but often those popular songs have an interesting origin and meaning. The song “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” by Band Aid (1984) is one example of “festive” music with a meaningful history. This lesson can stretch over 3+ days and lead to great class discussions about the meaning behind song lyrics.
