Whether or not you teach Hamlet, this lesson is a must-have because of the guided way students are taught to drill down. Broken into five parts, students will forget that they are engaged in scholarly questions as they learn to own Shakespeare's words. This lesson comprehensively covers the text through a

Analyzing Macbeth's "The Porter Scene"

"The Porter Scene" in Macbeth can be analyzed beyond mere comic relief. I have employed an excerpt from On the Knocking At the Gate In Macbeth by Thomas DeQuincey that appears in several high school textbooks, identified two key quotations, and used these quotations as a springboard for students to Close-Read and to apply a Personal Response critical lens to this scene. I recommend this in-class discussion as a group post-reading activity or a pre-writing brainstorm.

Some students even use these for research paper projects. This is single page,
