Metacognitive markers for Close Reading
These can be used as bookmarks, desk tags or any other way you choose. The main point is to get the students to be aware that reading is not reading. Reading is THINKING! These symbols, when used consistently can help you see your students thinking and they enable the students to be more aware of their thought process. I use these all the time for the Close Reading process.
There are two sets. The first page is for primary grades and the second page is for upper elementary.

A 6-step organizer for answering a short-response question prompt in a written paragraph. Great for test-prep and organizing ideas. It includes a sample paragraph and a sample graphic organizer as an exemplar.

Inference Graphic Organizer
In the first column students should write the exact quote/evidence from the story or article. In the second column students should write the quote/evidence in their OWN WORDS and in the last column the students make the evidence relevant and link it to the question/main idea. This has been very helpful in our 6th grade ICT classroom!

Teaching strategies for answering questions from reading passages will help your students feel confident during any assignment or assessment! Modeling and reinforcing these strategies through out the year will make students apply them more consistently. As they experience success their "I can" attitude will grow! I like to have each student put one in a place where they can easily refer to it when completing work. (There are two per page)
