Harlem Renaissance, Langston Hughes

This resource was used in my 8th grade US History course as a quick Do Now to settle students in, and help recall information about the Harlem Renaissance. Students liked this page because it was short, and quick. I like this page because it hits the standards, and exposes students to some of the literature of this time period. Students have a Harlem Renaissance unit 7th grade ELA, so this was enjoyable for them as well. I also have a Louis Armstrong activity if you are looking to bring music

The Haiku poem is a beautiful way to write about a topic using descriptive imagery. This two-page handout includes a short background of the haiku poem, directions, and an example haiku. The second page of the document provides space to write your own! Because of the artwork that is included, after the poem is written, the student is able to print and frame the poem. The poem would be a wonderful gift or decor piece for personal use.

Creative Writing Identity Activity- The Quilt of Me

This is a creative writing activity I did with students, useful for personal narrative essays or any other non-fiction creative writing projects. We talked about how identity is not a box you put yourself into, but a quilt patched together of all the things that are meaningful to who you are. Had students put in each box of the quilt something relevant to who they are. Then I had them use those details to put either into a poem or as inspiration for a personal essay.

You can select your own instrumental to go with it or have your scholars make their own beat (that lesson plan will be coming soon)! Please let me know how you like it and if you are interested in any other raps for your scholars (I have many). And don't forget to rate! Thank-you! ©2013, Maryam

Poetry plays with meaning when it identifies resemblances or makes comparisons between things. In this way, poetry deals with particular things in concrete language because our emotions respond best to these things. In this lesson, students will be introduced to literary role models, performers, and writing craft techniques that discuss meaning in poetry. This lesson includes an overview of the elements of poetry and offers students a way to learn how to use these elements by implementing them i

Figurative language is so diverse; yet, fun. One aspect that most students require to respect and enjoy figurative language is the autonomy. This assignment allows for the students to work in teams to discover, reinforce and explore the wonderful world of language through music. As long as the song lyrics are not explicit, the students create every choice and can share their favorite artists and songs. An excellent way to learn how to collaborate and delegate. Learn more about poetry resources

Poetry encourages students to engage with language, explore their thoughts and feelings, and connect with the broader human experience. If you’re a teacher or parent looking for printable and digital poetry resources, look no further. TPT has an extensive collection of resources, created by other teachers, that are designed to help with any need across grade levels.

If you want to make poets out of younger students in elementary grades, then acrostic poems or fill in the blank poems are the perfect place to start. (In fact, many poetry resources on TPT include templates so your students can easily get started producing their own poetry, whether it’s a haiku, or limerick.) For older students in middle and high school, you can find an array of resources to teach them about everything from iambic pentameter, figurative language, to famous poets from history. With plenty of TPT resources at your fingertips, you can sharpen your students’ poetry skills in no time.

Fun and engaging poetry activities to try

Teaching students about poetry can be an engaging and creative experience. Here are a few ideas for poetry activities that you can find on TPT to help you introduce and explore the world of poetry with your students:

Poetic Device Scavenger Hunt

Distribute some poems and have students identify and highlight poetic devices like similes, metaphors, alliteration, onomatopoeia, and imagery. Discuss what these are and the overall impact on the reader's experience.

Poetry Analysis Jigsaw

Divide students into small groups, assigning each group a different poem. Have each group analyze the assigned poem's themes, tone, and literary devices, and present their findings to the class.

Poetry Slam or Performance

Organize a poetry slam where students can perform poems they’ve written themselves or those written by famous poets. This will help build confidence and strengthen their public speaking skills.

Writing Poetry from Different Perspectives

Ask students to write a poem from the perspective of an inanimate object or an animal to foster empathy and encourage creative, out-of-the-box thinking.

Creating Found Poetry

Provide magazines, newspapers, or online articles. Have students cut out interesting words and phrases, and use them to create their own unique poems.

These (and other!) activities can help deepen your students’ appreciation for poetry and enhance their creative writing skills.
