Since graduating from college 20 years ago, I have been working with young children in the classroom. For the last 14 years I have worked in a preschool setting, primarily with two and three year old children. I cannot get enough of that age! Over the years I have come to love and believe in the power of telling stories as a way to teach children about the world, and their place in it. When those stories are about the children themselves, or the people they know, it is even more powerful. They love seeing themselves in the pages of a book, and I love sending them the message that they are important enough to be the subject of a book. As they study and discuss the pictures on the pages, they are gaining valuable literacy skills.
I teach in a play based, child centered classroom. I believe children learn from playing with real, open ended materials, in a warm environment designed to foster independence and exploration.
