The SPED Collective

I have had the privilege of teaching post-secondary education for young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Because there are no curriculums already developed for what I teach, I create my own curriculum and materials. I have developed the curriculum and taught: Money Skills, Personal Finance, Daily Living Skills, Social Skills, and Trained 4 Life (resume building, job interviews). After several years of teaching, I was given the responsibility/privilege to create and develop a two year program designed to reduce the academic component and focus on functional life skills. In 2015 I was named one of Exceptional Parent Magazine's Teacher of the Year, an honor I was very humbled to receive.

I believe that the key to teaching anything is developing relationships with the students. While I develop my own curriculum, I believe that I teach students, not curriculum. Having relationships with the students allows you to play off of previous conversations, and bring elements of student interest into the classroom. I am a very hands-on, teacher and believe in direct instruction and then the ability to practice and work on specific skills.
