9 years of teaching experience, currently teaching high school in a Classical Christian School. My current classes are 10th grade Medieval History, 11th grade Rhetoric, 11th grade British Literature, 12th grade American Literature, and 12th grade Senior Thesis. In the past I've also taught Latin (multiple grades), Geography, Archaeology, and Composition.
My teaching style tends to be very conversation/discussion-driven. This is particularly the case in my literature classes, where I rely much less on worksheets/activities (they are Juniors and Seniors after all) and much more on group discussion, analytical and creative writing assignments, and the occasional formal test. I want to teach the students not just to dissect literature, but also to enjoy the stories, characters, and poetry as the authors intended. Since I find myself with one foot in history and the other foot in archaeology, I take a both/and approach in teaching medieval history. While the students learn about dates, people, and events through secondary reading assignments and my own lectures, they are also looking at the primary source texts and the artifacts of daily life (introduced through my lecture power-points and documentary videos). Most importantly, though, I engage with the students constantly, even during lectures, presenting challenging questions to get them to wrestle through the process of history. I want my students to connect with the people and events of the past on a personal level and to have more of a holistic understanding of how history "happens".
