I'm starting my 8th year teaching, including 7th and 8th grade science, kindergarten, 5th grade, and most recently, 3 years of 6th grade. I've taught English language learners overseas and from a broad range of backgrounds here, in Virginia. In my general education classroom, my students have a diverse array of needs, including those recently immigrated and learning English, those who are easily bored and need additional challenges, and those who struggle to access the curriculum because of learning disabilities or attention deficit disorder. I am especially experienced with supporting special education students in the regular curriculum, as well as navigating the IEP and 504 Plan processes.
I love using project-based-learning units to motivate students and develop their collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking. Rubrics and self-assessment are important aspects of any assignment. I use Guided Math and Guided Reading structures in my classroom, to ensure all students have access to the curriculum but are met at where they are.
