I taught chemistry and physics over 4 decades prior to my retirement in 2017. I engaged students in 6th through 12th grade science classes in urban public schools, exclusive private schools and in comprehensive Catholic high schools. In addition I have written articles published in the "Physics Teacher", provided dozens of teacher workshops since 2000 and mentored students winning science fairs at the state level and numerous Physics Team winners at a variety of competitions over the years. I hope to share my approaches, experiences and insights with as many teachers as possible!
I am a lifelong member and national leader of workshop for the American Modeling Science Teacher Association. This approach to science emphasized student experience, reflection, discussion and the genuine understanding that comes from allowing students to be scientists in the science classroom. Taking measurements, creating explanations, testing those explanations and discussing the insights gained while doing science.
My students to won state championships at the science fair (3 x's), chess team (3x's) and physics competitions (5 X's). Their accomplishments meant the most to me. Documented awards include: 2001,2016 Scott Barre Award for Physics Teaching 1994 State of Alabama ALFA Teacher of the Month Award 1996 Alabama Teacher of Year by T & L Magazine 1994 Alabama Science Teacher of the Year by ASTA (Alabama) 1992 Presidential Award in Science Teaching National Winner 1991 Mobile, AL Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Teacher 1990 Nominated Teacher of the Year by Mobile Public School System
1996......Ph.D. from University of South Alabama 1989......M.Ed. University of South Alabama 1981......B.S. Secondary Education from University of South Carolina 1978......Associate of Arts from St Leo College (St. Leo Florida) 1975-9...Computer and Radar Systems technician for USAF
I continue to do professional development under the auspices of the American Modeling Science Teacher Association. In this effort I try to train teachers in how to engage students in productive classroom discourse and genuine learning about our physical world. I have hiked the Grand Canyon wilderness each summer for over two decades now. Even at an advancing age I plan to continue this for as long as I am able. In addition I enjoy visiting grand children and grand children scattered about the country.
