TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Adult Literacy Program: ESL/TOEFL Mainly teaching English as a Second Language. Helping students pass the TOEFL examination. Teaching includes writing, reading, listening and speaking. Students learn complex writing like building thesis statements, main ideas with supporting detail as well as learning basic English components like correct usage of pronouns, articles and grammar structure. While I mainly work with ESL students because of the ESL population where I live, adult literacy provides any type of help with basic education. Like passing GED exams, learning basic writing/reading/mathematics. CORNERSTONE ACADEMY: First Grade Teacher’s Assistant Helped lead teacher prepare lessons and grade, took over the first grade classroom throughout different times during the workday. Took over as substitute when lead teacher was absent. Received exposure to classical education through the use of the trivium, ABEKA curriculum and phonics. o Tutored some first grade students individually in grammar and mathematics. 51 TALK & Star Teachers: Lead ESL Teacher Used an online program to interact with Chinese students to help them with their English. Taught all different ages from toddlers to adults. Students had a variety of English knowledge, some knew no English, some were more fluent than others

MY TEACHING STYLE

When it comes to how I teach, usually I like to get a focus on the needs of the student and then work with that. I make objectives to reach by the end of our course and most of the time my teaching is made for passing something specific. Currently, I'm helping a student pass her TOEFL exam.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

While I love teaching and am glad I still get to do some of it. My main job right now is to be a mom to my toddler. There's nothing like watching your child grow that truly educate you. However, in the meantime, I work for the Adult Literacy Program in educating adults with mainly English as the focus. Also, I run a blog called Mariam's @stopbymariams.wordpress.com where I share short stories, lessons & snippets from my personal journey in life. On Teacher's Pay Teachers, you can find ESL lesson plans, simple ESL writing worksheets (this is helpful if your student is having a hard time writing standard essays), and sometimes some fun recipes.
