After thirty plus years of classroom teaching in a low socio-economic school, I decided to apply my skill in other ways...sharing the STEAMs I have done over the years with you, my fellow teachers. Before entering our profession, I substituted for 3 years to see if teaching was a fit for me. I taught for 7 years in kindergarten, 17 years at the middle school teaching Mathematics (remedial arithmetic - prealgebra) and History (Paleolithic Times - Age of Exploration and American History) and finally, 4 years at a math and science magnet school (general science). While teaching at Sycamore School, Claremont, I presented at the Claremont Reading Symposium and have also presented at Chapman University 's Conference for Challenged Students on Rethinking Homework. I have a Master's Degree in Curriculum Development and Instruction which I obtained after decades in the classroom and when I felt I was truly a master of this craft. although I am no longer in the classroom, I keep my skills sharp by tutoring students from kindergarten to Grade 6.
Teacher as facilitator. Classes are student-centered, collaborative, and hands-on. I subscribe to the Chinese proverb: I hear and I forget, I see and I remember, I do and I understand. Art and games to support student understanding of content are incorporated into activities and projects.
