I have taught both elementary and middle school music since 2003. During this time, I have really enjoyed having school choirs. There is something about children's voices that makes my hear soar! I have always done fun Earth Day concerts with my students, and one day, a student said to me, "We sing about taking care of the planet, but are we ever going to do anything about it?" I called a local environmental group that day, and 3 weeks later, my choir kids were getting their hands dirty outdoors making seedballs to restore areas in the Boulder, CO open spaces that were destroyed by the 2013 flood. This is how Sing the World Green began. I have continued combining music and environmental service since then. I also began composing songs because of my love the Earth, but also because I didn't see a whole lot of environmental choral music available. I have been using these songs, and others that will be up soon, with my school choir, our district honor choir, church choirs, and summer camps.
I use a combination of Orff and Kodaly in my teaching. I always try to give my students a lot of genuine music making experiences, so we play a lot of instruments from a young age. I also love to facilitate collaboration among my students, in which they are working together to create music. I also believe that movement is such an important part of musical expression, so we do a lot of moving in my classroom as well. And of course, I teach and insist of excellent singing!
In 2011, my choir was asked to sing at the Boulder Valley School District Impact on Educations awards ceremony. In 2018, I conducted one of my original Sing the World Green compositions at the Adams 12 Fifth Grade District Honor Choir.
